Have a BEER

If giving feedback could drive you to drink, have a BEER.
Not the cheap, flat, weird aftertaste kind, but a crisp and satisfying brew that makes you feel all warm and good inside.
BEER: Behavior, Effect, Expectation, Result.
Nothing says “let’s talk about your behavior” like an acronym that takes you straight to happy hour.
Straight from the Tap
B = Behavior
Start by identifying the action, not the attitude. No guessing games or vague vibes. Just the pour: “Hey, in yesterday’s meeting, you cut off Jamie a few times.”
E = Effect
Tell them how it tasted. Was it smooth and refreshing, or a little skunky? “That made it hard for her to finish her point, and others stopped chiming in.”
E = Expectation
Now step up to the bar. What should the next round look like? “I’d appreciate if you could hold off until folks finish speaking before jumping in.”
R = Result
What’s the buzz? Share the potential upsides—or hangovers—of the change: “That’ll help create more trust and better ideas. If not, quieter folks may hold back their contributions.”
The BEER model is like a Heady Topper, the original New England Style craft IPA, before everyone else got on the bandwagon. It’s got bite, clarity, and a satisfying finish.
I Raise a Glass To You!
Ben Franklin said beer is proof God loves us and wants us to be happy. Skip the awkward feedback and grab a BEER.
Cheers, Sid Abrams, thanks for this tip.
