Most teams say they value “respect,” but what that word means something different to me than it does to you.

For some, it’s about tone.

For others, it’s about being direct.

For one person, interrupting might signal passion. For another, it could be a trigger.

So, if we all define respect differently, how can we build a respectful team?

Rather than commit to being respectful, we should commit to being messy and cleaning up the mess.

Conflict is inevitable. In fact, it’s essential.

The healthiest teams engage in productive conflict, where disagreement isn’t feared.

But even when someone missteps (and they will), it’s not the end of the relationship—it’s an opportunity for repair.

Just like in our personal lives, the real magic isn’t in perfect harmony. It’s in the rhythm of all healthy relationships: harmony → disharmony → repair.

Instead of pledging to always be respectful, pledge instead to get messy and clean up the mess.

How else can the best ideas rise to the top?
