You work with a bunch of animals.

🤣

People are wired by evolution. Our ancient animal instincts still show up at the Monday team meeting, so why not use them to your advantage?

Here are some animal behaviors that you might see in the office:

  • Dominance is felt, not forced. Want authority? Stand tall, claim your space, and speak with calm certainty

  • People gravitate toward strength (physical, mental, and emotional). Strength isn’t bravado, it’s in doing the hard thing (deciding, acting, personal accountability, having the tough conversation…).

  • Territory matters. Respect is lost when boundaries aren't enforced. Respect people’s boundaries. Create your own (time, roles, space).

  • Silence signals power. Predators don't announce their moves. You don’t need to fill every silence. Pause before answering. Listen. Observe.

  • Pack dynamics exist (your team is a tribe). The way you treat yourself sets the tone for how others treat you. Confidence is contagious — so is insecurity.

  • Scarcity creates value. Abundant resources are devalued, wasted, and disregarded. Be generous, but show you value your time. Others will, too.

  • Eye contact either intimidates or exposes weakness. Know the difference, and use it wisely.

If you want to lead, influence, or just get more buy-in, don’t ignore the animal instincts in the room.
