Just acknowledge the dang email

I’ve observed a poor communication habit with both younger and disengaged employees. It has a big impact on effectiveness, personal relationships, and group culture.

So no matter who you are, just acknowledge the dang email.

Think of it this way…

You send someone a request. Or a question. Or even an FYI.

And they think, OK, I’m on it, but they don’t let you know they are.

So what happens? You probably start making up all kinds of stories…

“Did they see it?”

“Are they going to do it?”

“Will I sound like a pest if I follow up?”

“This will reflect badly on me, if they don’t do their part.”

“They’re incompetent.”

“What a jerk, trying to undermine me.”

Like I said, a big impact on effectiveness, personal relationships, and group culture.

So please, just acknowledge the dang email.

Don’t make your colleagues carry that uncertainty and start making up stories about you.

“Got it.”

“Received.”

“Roger that.”

“On it.”

“I don’t have an answer yet, but I’m looking into it.”

Better still, “I’ll have this to you by Thursday.”

It only takes seconds to signal that you’re reliable, or that they’ve crossed a boundary. Either way, you’re shaping their opinion of you.

Confident communication is intentional and proactive.
