Delegation isn’t about getting work off your plate
🔥 Becoming influential doesn’t happen by accident. Practice with us. 🔥
“Can you put this presentation together?”
Sure you delegated the task, but if they still need you to decide what goes in it, approve every choice, and solve every problem, you created an assistant, or a dependent.
The real value of delegation is ownership.
When you put someone in charge of an outcome, they have to make decisions, anticipate problems, coordinate with others, and use judgment. They have to learn and grow.
Which is why effective delegation can be really inefficient…at first.
Sure, you could do the work faster yourself. Sure you don’t want your boss to think your team sucks or that you’re a lousy leader.
Karma is the idea that your actions, intentions, and choices create consequences that shape what you experience in the future.
In other words, when you simply delegate tasks and not outcomes you trade speed today for dependence tomorrow.
And eventually, every question, approval, and decision runs through you. You’re the bottleneck to your team achieving greater things.
Instead of: “Can you put together the presentation for Friday?”
Try: “You own Friday’s presentation. The goal is to get the leadership team to approve the new approach. You decide how we get there. Let’s check in Wednesday, and come to me sooner if you hit a wall.”
Then comes the hard part.
Let them do it differently than you would. Let them stumble. Let them figure it out.
High expectations. High support.
Delegation may cost you time today. Doing everything yourself costs you and your team tomorrow.
Just tell your boss what you’re doing: developing your team.
Because you know what they say about karma.
