A boundary can be clear and still land badly
🧠 Knowing your style is interesting. Using it is influence. 🧠
Boundaries aren’t about controlling someone else. They’re about clearly communicating what you will do, accept, or participate in…and what you won’t.
A boundary doesn’t need a speech. The more you explain, justify, apologize, or defend it, the more it starts to sound negotiable.
A boundary can be clear and still land badly because they sound different to different DiSC Styles.
While the boundary stays the same, how you communicate your needs should change based on the listener’s needs.
D Style Needs: Results, control, autonomy
“No. That doesn’t work for me.”
“I can do X or Y. Which is the priority?”
“If this needs to happen today, something else has to move.”
“I’m not taking that on.”
“Here’s what I can do.”
“I understand you disagree. My decision stands.”
i Style Needs: Connection, recognition, inclusion
“I want to help but I can’t commit to that right now.”
“I value working with you, however I need to say no to this one.”
“I’m happy to talk about this. I’m not willing to argue about it.”
“I want us to figure this out together, but that option doesn’t work for me.”
“I’m going to take a break. Let’s reconnect later.”
“I’m still with you. I just see this differently.”
S Style Needs: Harmony, support, stability
“I want to help, but I need to protect my other commitments.”
“Can I think about it and get back to you?”
“I’m willing to talk about this, but I need us to keep it respectful.”
“I know this may be disappointing. I’m still going to say no.”
“I care about getting this right for both of us.”
“I need some time before we continue this conversation.”
C Style Needs: Logic, accuracy, clarity
“I can do this by Friday. I can’t commit to Wednesday.”
“I need more information before I agree to that.”
“That’s outside what we agreed to.”
“I’m happy to discuss the issue. I’m not willing to speculate about motives.”
“If the scope changes, we need to revisit the timeline.”
“Here are the conditions under which I can move forward.”
Speak in their language and they'll be more likely to hear you and respect your boundary.
