Annoyed?-Maybe-it’s-a-mirror.
Sometimes the person who annoys you is holding up a mirror.
(This post refers to the 4 DiSC Communication Styles.)
A fast-moving D style gets frustrated when a C keeps asking questions: “Enough analysis already. Let’s go.”
But that C may be the person who spots the flaw before the D commits to a bad decision.
An i gets excited about a new idea. The S pumps the brakes: “Have we thought about how the team will react?”
Annoying when you want momentum, but useful when you’re about to drag ten people somewhere they aren’t ready to go.
The reverse happens too.
The S who wants everyone comfortable may need the D to push them a little: “You’ve got to say the hard thing, even if it rocks the boat.”
The C building the perfect plan may need the i who says, “This is good enough. Let’s get people’s buyin.”
You sharpen a blade with friction.
So the next time someone’s style starts getting under your skin, resist the urge to dismiss it as a personality problem and pause…
Maybe they’re slowing you down because you need to slow down.
Maybe they’re pushing you because you need pushing.
Don’t avoid the friction. Use it to sharpen your edge.
