The power of the open-ended question

It’s Friday. Let’s keep this short.

If you want to understand a teammate, employee, or anyone’s thoughts, motivations, or intentions better, you can ask open-ended questions.

The Society of Human Resource Management uses the acronym TED, to help us remember to say:

“Tell me more.”

“Explain what you mean.”

“Define that term or concept for me.”

Open-ended questions are less threatening because they show you’re interested in learning, rather than signaling that you know what the other person feels or needs.

Open-ended questions can elicit more thoughtful, thorough responses, to help get you the clarity you need.

Have a good weekend.
