I just bought an expensive sandwich.

The server smiled and said, “Nice watch.”

Next thing I know, I’m tipping more than usual—reflexively.

Somehow, being noticed, feeling seen by this person, upped my generosity.

Researchers call it the liking principle, and it’s one of Robert Cialdini’s core principles of influence.

We’re more likely to say “yes” to people we like, and we tend to like people who are similar to us, compliment us, or make us feel good about ourselves.

“I’ve always admired how you think through risks—can I run something by you?”

“I appreciate how committed you’ve been to this project.”

“You’re great with data—mind giving this a quick look?”

Liking is one of the most powerful tools of influence because it lowers resistance and builds instant rapport.

Just keep it real, authentic.

Offer up something small and true: a specific compliment, recognition, or appreciation.

You’ll lower defenses…and maybe open wallets.
