As a 2 Minute Tip reader, you know how to use mutual objectives to persuade, influence, and convince.

However, if you say…

“I need you to get this done so I can do my job.”

…you might think you are focusing on a mutual objective, but as you know, it’s not what you say that matters, but what is heard.

Depending on how it’s delivered/received, the other person might only hear:

“You’re the problem.”

They think you’re on the opposite side of a negotiation table.

They think it’s you vs. them.

So, come around to their side.

“If you can get this to me by Friday, I’ll be able to add my part, and the team will be able to meet our deadline. Can you make that happen?”

Now you’re working on the puzzle together.
