Your status shows up in your tone, structure, and word choice, not just in your title.

It shows up before you even get to your point.

High-status language doesn’t try to impress. It simply leads.

Low: “Hey everybody, how you all doing? That’s awesome.”

High: “Good morning. Let’s begin.”

Low: “Yeah, so a lot of things happened in the fourth quarter…”

High: “We had several key developments in Q4. Let’s walk through them.”

Low: “Why don’t we get started here…”

High: “Let’s dive in.”

Low: “There’s one thing I want to mention about prep.”

High: “First, let’s talk prep. Here’s what matters.”

Low: “I actually think it might be because of Troy.”

High: “The gap was likely due to Troy’s absence.”

Low: “So yeah… that’s, uh, that’s everything for the finance team.”

High: “That concludes the finance update. Let me leave you with three key points.”

Low: “Um, yeah. So ultimately, there’s three things to take away…”

High: “Three key takeaways: [1], [2], and [3].”

Low-status language sounds like you’re hoping to be heard.

High-status language sounds like you expect to be.

Deliver it like you mean it.

Lead yourself, and others will follow.
