How to really read someone

If you want to really read someone, ask, “What do they want me to feel about them?”

We all wear masks at work.

Some look like confidence. Others, control.

But, by definition, a mask is hiding something.

What someone wants you to see is masking the very thing they fear (whether they’re aware of it or not).

The overly agreeable team member? They may fear rejection.

The micromanager might not want to be seen as incompetent or irrelevant.

Even humor can be a mask. Those jokes could be a deflection.

Carl Jung called these masks the persona—the part of ourselves we present to the world to gain acceptance and protect our deeper self.

Because the moment we feel mentally uncomfortable, one instinct is to hide.

To protect.

To control how others see us.

All day today, focus on what they want you to notice.
