I have one simple job: get from you, who knows something, to another person, someone who needs to know it.

Seems easy enough.

Except my life, short as it is, is not easy.

Instead of going directly where I'm needed, you send me to your manager, who passes me to a director, who forwards me to a VP, who mentions me to another VP, who tells another director, who tells a manager, who finally delivers me to the person who needed to know or answer the question in the first place.

When I go up the chain of command, across divisions, then back down again, I've lost important details. Someone added assumptions. Someone softened my wording. Someone left out the context because they thought it wasn't important.

By the time I arrive, I'm exhausted and totally bent out of shape.

You can hardly recognize me.

And everyone wonders why there's confusion.

Every person I pass through is another opportunity for delay, misunderstanding, and frustration.

It's not because people are careless. It's because every human naturally filters information through their own experiences, priorities, and interpretations.

I don't want to travel through an organizational chart.

I want a direct flight.

I'm not suggesting you ignore reporting relationships. Managers still need visibility. Leaders still make decisions. Accountability still matters.

But accountability and communication are not the same thing.

So here’s my request to you, dear message sender.

When you need to reach someone in another department, send me directly to that person. Don’t make me travel up one side of the organizational chart and back down the other.

At the same time, keep the people who need visibility in the loop. Let your manager and other stakeholders know whom you’re contacting, what you’re trying to accomplish, and why going directly will help resolve the issue faster.

“I’m going to connect directly with Jordan so we can clarify the details and avoid unnecessary back-and-forth. I’ll keep you updated on what we decide.”

That isn’t going around people. It’s communicating with transparency, respecting everyone’s role, and choosing the most efficient path.

No connecting flights.
