Leadership researcher Liz Wiseman says there are two kinds of leaders:

  • Multipliers use their intelligence to amplify others. They ask questions. They stretch people. They let the team own the win.

  • Diminishers drain intelligence from the room. They rescue. They micromanage. They jump in to fix.

  • Here’s the image I use, from her book, Multipliers:

It’s against the rules for a coach to run on the field and score the winning goal, so why do we do it in business?

An employee struggles on a call. The manager jumps in. Saves the deal. Feels heroic.

But what just happened?

The manager scored.

The employee learned fear.

So many fears.

Fear of messing up.

Fear of looking bad.

Fear that if they don’t perform perfectly, the boss will take over.

That’s not leadership. That’s dependency-building.

Multipliers understand something critical: growth requires wobbling. People learn by doing — not by being saved.

Yes, your team will make mistakes.

Yes, you may have to tell your client you’re giving your junior employee a growth opportunity.

Because confidence isn’t built in perfection. It’s built in ownership.

If you always step in, you become the star.

If you step back, you build stars.

Resist the urge to run onto the field. Coach from the sideline.
