Writing succinctly

Shorter is better, just about always. Short is more clear, interesting, and powerful.

The next time you sit down to write an important email, letter, or blog post, here’s a tip: draft first, then come back later with fresh eyes. When you return, read it out loud and delete all unnecessary words.

Instead of “Our staff members are committed to treating each customer individually,” you can cut out the fat and edit it to “Our staff gives personalized attention to each customer.”

Same message, easier to read.

As Mark Twain said, “If I’d only had more time, I would have written a shorter letter.”
