Using DiSC in group settings
🧩 Want more like this? It’s inside.🧩
A question I get asked a lot in my workshops is how to use DiSC when you're addressing a group—whether in a meeting or a presentation.
Every meeting has a mix of people who process information differently. Some people want you to get straight to the point. Others want context. Some want harmony. Others want data.
Plus, in a group setting, it may be difficult to know everyone’s style.
If you communicate the same way to the entire group, you’re not really adapting to the audience, and your message won’t land the way you intend.
Here’s a simple 4-step process to communicate with multiple styles:
Step 1: Lead with the bottom line (for the D styles) - Start with your main point—the takeaway, decision, or result.
“Here’s the issue and what I recommend.”
“We’re here today because…”
“What I want you to know is…”
Step 2: Make it engaging (for the i Styles) - Bring energy and connection. Show why it matters to people and the bigger picture.
“This will really help the team because…”
“This is exciting because…”
“Here’s why this matters to us…”
Step 3: Back it with data (for the C Styles) - Add detail and logic. Show the data, process, or reasoning behind your point. As if you're writing an email, do this with headers.
“Here are the numbers behind this decision…”
“Let me walk you through the data…”
“Here’s how we arrived at this…”
Step 4: Close with support (for your S Styles) - Slow down and be thoughtful. Show how this affects people and supports the group.
“I want to make sure this works well for everyone…”
“Yes, this will impact the team, but here’s how we’ll support you…”
“I want to make sure we’re all comfortable with this…”
Why this works:
D’s and I’s are less patient. They want the bottom line and what to do next.
C’s need detail and accuracy—and they’re willing to wait for it.
S’s want support and stability. They’ll be patient, but they need to feel considered.
When you match your message to how people process information, you reduce friction and increase buy-in.
Don’t just communicate your message the way you hear it in your head. Communicate it so they can too.
