Here’s my strategy to influence super-fast.

To use someone’s energy against them, like a jujitsu master.

It’s not MMA. It’s MML.

Match, Mirror, Lead is a classic influence method, be it for sales, leading, hostage negotiation...even toddlers.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Match their energy, tone, or pace. Speak their language. If they’re amped, be amped. If they’re quiet, drop your volume.

  2. Mirror posture, gestures, and key words. Subtle is better. Cross arms when they do. Use their phrases (“tight timeline,” “big picture”). This builds trust beneath the surface.

  3. Lead — once they feel seen, shift the tone. Change to your pace. Relax to your level. Assume your grounded posture. They’ll often follow without realizing it.

It’s a kind of dance. If you try to lead too early, they may pull away or sense what you’re up to.

If do this well, they’ll let you lead.

Your teammate’s venting at 100mph.

You nod, listen, maybe even say, “Yeah, that is frustrating.”

Then you pause and say, “Can I share a thought?” in a calmer tone.

Watch them start to mirror you.

It’s not manipulation. It’s a connection.

And connection creates influence.

The trick? You’re not fighting them. You’re guiding them.

They won’t know why they feel comfortable with you.

They’ll just know they do.

Black belts don’t argue. They breathe, match, and lead.
