Take the long-term view on people

Yes, he could be reactionary, but he also learned to take the long-term view on people.

He trained himself to not react and fix a problem but rather to focus on the person’s development.

He would ask himself:

“What do I need to do to help this person learn?”

He wanted to build a team, to do great work in the decades to come, not just in the moment.
